A piercing cold read

This House Will Never Be Warm by Paul Avery Tindol

5/5

While freezing to death, a desperate Civil War soldier makes a winter pact with a mysterious entity that curses his young family and all future generations. In modern day siblings Jasper and Autumn are trapped in a blizzard, unknowingly awaiting judgement as the debt has come due once more.

The pacing in this novella was excellent. I was impressed by how well the lore was weaved into such a short read. The use of plummeting temperature reminders pushed the cabin walls in on the reader as well as slicing a chill into the air. With building tension and a satisfying ending that proves Mother Cold is not to be trifled with you will not lose interest.

I listened to the audible narration. Nate DuFort did extremely well with differentiating characters and emotions. The cover art is enticing and sets the mood for a tale that chills you to the very bone.
